What does the name mean?

The twelve knight-errants of Charlemagne were called Paladins. In modern English this may mean "Knight in Shining Armour".

paladin (plural paladins)

    1. A heroic champion (especially a knightly one).

    2. A defender or advocate of a noble cause. (A defender of faith).

    3. Any of the twelve Companions of the court of Emperor Charlemagne.

    Heroic champion

    Definition: fighter for cause

    Synonyms: champion, hero, knight, supporter

The Paladins were the foremost warriors of Charlemagne's court.

Charlemagne created the Twelve Paladins in the 8th century, a group of twelve powerful soldiers who commanded Charlemagne's troops and protected him from bodily harm.

"Paladin" has come to refer to any chivalrous hero such as King Arthur's Knights of the Round Table.

Tales of the paladins once rivaled the stories of King Arthur and the knights of the Round Table in popularity.
